Tjerk Oosterhof runs, in partnership with his parents, an arable farm in Engwierum in the province Friesland in the north of the Netherlands. The total acreage is 265 hectares, of which 15 hectares for table potatoes, 45 hectares for seed potatoes, 55 hectares for sugar beets, 8 hectares onions and the rest for wheat. In 2006 the company invested in a new storage and grading building of 40 x 30 meters.
The front of the buidling is used for grading and the rear part is used for storage of 1100 boxes for seed potatoes, stacked 6 high. The storage room is seperated into 2 rooms, each provided with a Mooij aspiration system. Both rooms are also provided with refrigeration. The refrigeration is fully integrated into the ventilation system.
For control the Orion storage computer is selected. This storage computer is capable for up to 16 independant controls. The switch box is operated by means of the operation unit MSF which is mounted in the grading area. The axial flow fans in both rooms are provided with frequency converters for variable air quantities and energy saving.
The Orion controls the hatches and fans based on temperature and relative humidity. The long rows of boxes are well ventilated by means of the Mooij aspiration system. Rapid drying and cooling with efficacy is needed. The integrated refrigeration is only assisting if the outside air cooling is not available.
